Women Water Stewards in the Philippines
Filipinas take the BioSand Filter Implementer Training!
A Single Drop conducted it's first BioSand Filter (BSF) trainings in the Philippines in June 2006. The workshops were open to all NGOs who were interested in learning the technology to offer an affordable household water treatment to their target areas. ASD and a San Francisco based women's network sponsored ten women from all over the country to learn the technology, and one woman to expand her knowledge to become one of the first Filipina BSF trainers.
ASDs commitment did not stop there. We continued to support all the women through technology assistance and social marketing tools. We also included five of the women's regions in the Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao Provinces (ARMM) to be included in our PODS pilot program to help them create a BSF production facility and community based water organization to start their micro-businesses. This region was selected because it is one the poorest in the Philippines due to ongoing conflict and lack of access to resources. This program was sponsored by the Philippine Canadian Cooperation Organization for the Canadian Ambassador to the Philippines.
ASD continues to support the growth of these organizations by offering them ongoing appropriate technology trainings, organizational and project management workshops and WASH inventory and planning. Read more about our work in the Philippines...
